This BBC documentary details the history of public relations (i.e propaganda) and weaves in its fabric the world wars, the creation of the consumer, political manipulation and at its essence... the formation of the "Individual Self" -- that western invention of a person utterly consumed and controlled by fulfilling their personal desires, as if it is the primary aim of life.

I've read lots of books on the subject of public relations and democracy, but this documentary does so much more. It lays down the foundational concepts that reveal how our society has been shaped over the last hundred years... a process that has led our country farther and farther away from values of the heart -- community, family and spirituality -- towards values of the self, consumption, desire and at its essence... isolation.
